40 ACRES AND (NO) MULE
We bought 40 raw acres in Burleson County…and we have no idea what we’re doing. Kidding.
The first thing we did was walk every corner of it and let it tell us what it needed.
No plan survive first contact with the land. But we came prepared - with two Aggie Animal Science degrees, years of working in livestock and ag, plus five free laborers - I mean children
This is the beginning of building something that will outlast us. We’re documenting everything - the decision, the mistakes, the wins, the vendors, the costs, the process - so that other landowners don’t have to figure it out alone.
The Majors:
Land clearing - namely, massive mesquite infestation
Drainage and leveling - the land is full of ditches and valleys; how do we get it level and draining properly?
Soil quality and sampling - what will it support and how much improvement does it need?
Fence issues - what to trash, what to keep, replacement types
Water well drilling - how to find a driller, how deep to go, where to put the dang thing
Electricity - where to put the pole and proximity to the structures
We obviously have a lot of decisions to make. But we want to bring ya’ll along for the ride to share our knowledge, help teach what we know and what we learn through this process, and help grow responsible Texas landowners. Are you ready to go from #RawtoRanch? Let’s GO!
